A risk assessment written for a straightforward domestic job and a risk assessment written for a live commercial site are doing different jobs, even when they're covering similar work. On a commercial project, more people are relying on your paperwork to be right — other trades, the principal contractor, the client. This part goes deeper into what "advanced" actually means in practice: not more paperwork, but paperwork that holds up under real scrutiny.
Chapter 3 — Advanced risk assessments
The starting point for any risk assessment is the same one taught everywhere: identify the hazard, decide who might be harmed and how, evaluate the risk, record the controls, review when things change. Where commercial work differs is in how much weight each of those steps has to carry.
A generic, trade-wide risk assessment can describe the hazards of your trade in the abstract. A site-specific risk assessment describes the hazards of this task, on this site, this week. Reviewers on commercial projects are trained to spot the difference quickly — a document that could apply to any job on any site rarely survives review, because it hasn't actually assessed anything.
Three things separate an assessment that holds up from one that doesn't:
- The hierarchy of control is actually applied — eliminate the hazard where possible, then substitute, then engineering controls, then administrative controls, with PPE as the last line of defence rather than the first thing reached for.
- Interface risk is considered — not just what your task risks to your own team, but what it risks to other trades working nearby, and what their work risks to yours.
- The assessor's competence is evident — the document reads like it was written by someone who understands the task, not assembled from a template with the trade name changed.
Interface risk is the one most commonly missed, because it requires knowing what else is happening on site — information that usually only exists in the programme, not in your own risk assessment template. Where possible, ask what's scheduled alongside or immediately before your work, and note the relevant hazard if it changes your own risk picture: hot works nearby, another trade working overhead, restricted access shared with deliveries.
A risk assessment that could describe any site describes no site in particular.
Chapter 4 — Method statements that hold up under scrutiny
A method statement's job is to describe, step by step, how a task will actually be carried out safely. The most common failure isn't missing information — it's a method statement and a risk assessment that don't agree with each other. If the risk assessment identifies a control measure, the method statement needs to show where that control is actually applied in the sequence of work. Reviewers read the two side by side specifically looking for that alignment.
A method statement that reads well and a method statement that gets followed on site aren't always the same document. The difference usually comes down to specificity: naming the actual equipment, the actual sequence, the actual PPE for each stage, rather than a general description that technically covers the task without describing how your team will really do it.
On a shared programme, sequencing matters beyond your own task. A method statement that assumes exclusive access to an area, when three other trades are working the same zone that week, creates a coordination problem before work even starts. Where your sequence depends on another trade finishing first, or on an area being clear, that dependency is worth stating explicitly rather than assumed.
Emergency procedures deserve the same site-specific treatment. A generic "in an emergency, stop work and evacuate" line doesn't tell anyone where the nearest muster point actually is on this site, or who the site's first aider is this week. Five minutes checking the site induction pack before writing this section usually improves it more than any amount of general drafting.
Worth checking: before submitting, read your risk assessment and method statement back to back. Every control measure named in the risk assessment should appear somewhere in the method statement's actual sequence of work — not just be listed, but be visibly done at the right step.
