The dust that makes a mess and gets swept up isn't the dangerous part. The dangerous part is the fine dust — from cutting brick, block, concrete or stone — that's small enough to stay airborne and get deep into your lungs without ever really registering as "dust" at all. Long-term exposure to it is linked to serious, irreversible lung disease.

01 — Cutting and grinding are the worst offenders

Dry-cutting masonry, concrete or stone produces the finest and most dangerous dust of any common site task. Wet-cutting, or extraction fitted directly to the tool, cuts the airborne dust dramatically — it's the single biggest change available.

02 — A dust mask isn't a dust mask

Ordinary paper masks don't filter the fine particles that cause the real harm. An FFP3-rated mask, properly fitted, is the minimum for this kind of work — and "properly fitted" is doing real work in that sentence.

03 — Water suppression is cheap and it works

A simple water-fed attachment on a cutting tool knocks the fine dust down at the source, before it's airborne, for relatively little cost. It's one of the highest-value, lowest-effort changes on this list.

04 — It's cumulative, not one-off

The risk builds up over years of exposure, which is exactly why it's easy to treat casually day to day — nothing goes wrong today because of today's cut. Treat extraction and RPE as a habit for every cut, not a precaution reserved for the "big" jobs.

None of this is exotic advice — extraction, water suppression, the right mask. The hard part is doing it on the small jobs too, not just the ones where someone's watching. Check current HSE guidance for the specific exposure limits and requirements that apply to your trade.
